Residential: Lowry Loft
Description: The concept for this residential remodel, located in an abandoned warehouse building in downtown San Diego, was contingent upon several existing features and limitations. The plumbing stacks could not be moved and openings could be changed from windows to doors and vice versa but not relocated. The clients had contemporary taste, with specific needs for an accessible guest suite, a professional kitchen, and a sensitivity towards environmental issues. Working within the shell of a very rectangular plan, curved walls and built-in elements were used in the social spaces to soften the edges and define areas within an open plan. Private areas were broken into suites for maximum privacy and space efficiency. A central greenhouse was designed as the major focal point of the home in order to bring natural sunlight into parts of the home that otherwise would have relied solely on artificial light, and to create a sense of green garden space within a densely populated city.
